In Celebration of the life of Janis Marie Calhoun January 29, 1928 - June 2, 2018 Asbury United Methodist Church Mason Chapel June 16, 2018, 11:00 a.m. Janis Marie Newman Calhoun was the anchor and the superglue for our Calhoun family. It was a role she played not only at home but in life as well, including the many communities, children’s schools, and Methodist church organizations for which she led and belonged. Words that describe her: Steady, smart, understated, caring, lovely…. and a universally recognized trait many repeated to us -”she is so nice”. She approached life with the quiet underpinning of her Christian faith-love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control… plus lots of smarts. She was our example. In every endeavor, she was unassuming and the foundation that fostered success. She was born January 29, 1928, to Jacob and Willie Mae Newman in Cleveland, Texas, where she married our father, M.S. “Cal” Calhoun, in August 1947. They started their marriage and their family of three children in Premont/Falfurrias, Texas. Ten years later, as Dad’s professional career continued to expand, they moved to Fort Stockton, then to Pecos and Odessa. Then, as a couple, they realized a lifelong dream in 1976 and bought a cattle ranch in DeLeon, Texas. Retirement brought them back to Oklahoma in Tahlequah in 1999. Mom will always live in our memories, especially the wonderful family dinners each night at home after Dad’s work and our school. She was an excellent cook. She and Dad often teamed on meals, and they were especially good when Dad barbecued for company. And… she did like things made with sugar. She was a master of desserts, especially the cookies she baked for us after school. We remember the aroma out-of-the-oven cookies still wafting through the air. She passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Montereau Retirement Community. Jan (or Janis) was preceded in death by her husband Cal (M.S. Calhoun) in 2008. She is survived by her daughters, Page Haines and Patti McTigue, her son, Brian Calhoun and wife Sherilyn, and seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Our services today bring tears, for we miss her tremendously. And, they are also tears of joy and celebration for her life well-lived in every aspect. Well done good and faithful servant.
